Exodus 34:7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
I don't understand "without passions". Can you explain passions in this use of the word? Also, how does the prooftext, in which Paul declares himself a man of like passions, prove that G-d is without passions (instead of different passions, etc.) It seems like a logic stretch if not a fallacy to me.
ReplyDeleteAlso, refer the phrase, "working all things according to the counsel of His own immutable and most righteous will".
ReplyDeleteDoes "immutable will" mean that He never changes His mind? I can think of a few instances in Scriptures where His will doesn't seem to be immutable!
I made a separate post on the issue of "Without Passions." We can continue the discussion there. This issue has caused a lot of discussion on other blogs, like this one.

ReplyDeleteWestminster Larger Catechism Question 8
Q8: Are the more than one Gods?
A8: There is only one, the living and true God.
Westminster Confession, Chapter 2, section 1:
I. There is only one, living, and true God. He is infinite in being and perfection. He is a most pure spirit, indivisible, with no body, or parts. He cannot be influenced by something outside of Himself. He is immutable, unmesureably large, eternal, more than we can understand, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, most absolute. He makes all things work the way He desires them to work according to His unchangeable and righteous will, for his own glory. He is most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth. He forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin. He rewards those who diligently seek Him. He is most just and terrible in his judgements. He hates all sin, and he will not clear the guilty.
I was wondering if you had jumped ship! ;)
ReplyDeleteSo if God "cannot be influenced by something outside of Himself," does that make false the bumper sticker that says, "Prayer changes things"?
Is the statement "Prayer changes things" false?
ReplyDeleteWhen I said "cannot be influenced by something outside of Himself", I was trying to paraphrase you when you said "To say that God is without passions is to say that God cannot be acted upon by an external agent." in your post "without passions".
I believe it was C.S. Lewis who said "I don't pray to change God. I pray to change me." So as long as I'm something then "Prayer changes things" (me). But if the attitude is, if I do the right things and say the right words God will give me whatever I want, then God is a genie in a bottle. That kind of prayer does not change things.
I was only asking so you wouldn't get the Michael Jordan big head.
ReplyDeletePrayer does not "change God's essential nature." That was the phrase from my post that I was looking for.
Thanks for the Lewis quote. When God answers our prayers, we should not only thank Him for the answer, but for His grace that moved us to pray.
I haven't really checked out your photo until just now.
