Isaiah 53:2,3 —
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. Ver.3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Q. 46.
What was the estate of Christ's humiliation?
A. The estate of Christ's humiliation was that low condition, wherein he for our sakes, emptying himself of his glory, took upon him the form of a servant, in his conception and birth, life, death, and after his death, until his resurrection [s].

[s] Philippians 2:6-8 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Ver.8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Luke
1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Acts
2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Q47. How did Christ humble himself in his conception and birth?
A. Christ humbled himself in his conception and birth, in that, being from all eternity the Son of God, in the bosom of the Father, he was pleased in the fulness of time to become the son of man, made of a woman of low estate, and to be born of her; with divers circumstances of more than ordinary abasement [t].

[t] John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Ver.18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Galatians 4:4
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Luke
2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Q48. How did Christ humble himself in his life?
A. Christ humbled himself in his life, by subjecting himself to the law [v], which he perfectly fulfilled [w]; and by conflicting with the indignities of the world [x], temptations of Satan [y], and infirmities in his flesh, whether common to the nature of man, or particularly accompanying that his low condition [z].

[v] Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

[w] Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Ver.18 For in that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
Hebrews 4:15
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Q49. How did Christ humble himself in his death?
A. Christ humbled himself in his death, in that having been betrayed by Judas [a], forsaken by his disciples [b], scorned and rejected by the world [c], condemned by Pilate, and tormented by his persecutors [d]; having also conflicted with the terrors of death, and the powers of darkness, felt and borne the weight of God’s wrath [e], he laid down his life an offering for sin [f], enduring the painful, shameful, and cursed death of the cross [g].

[a] Matthew 27:4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

[b] Matthew 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

Q50. Wherein consisted Christ's humiliation after his death?
A. Christ's humiliation after his death consisted in his being buried [h], and continuing in the state of the dead, and under the power of death till the third day [i]; which hath been otherwise expressed in these words, He descended into hell.

[h] 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
