Day 46: Of Justification, part 4

Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 11, Sections 3-4

III. Christ, by His obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real and full satisfaction to His Father’s justice in their behalf [f]. Yet, in as much as He was given by the Father for them [g]; and His obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead [h]; and both, freely, not for any thing in them; their justification is only of free grace [i]; that both the exact justice, and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners [k].

[f] Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Ver.9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Ver.10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Ver.19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Ver.6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Ver.14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Ver.26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Ver.5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Ver.6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Ver.10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Ver.11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Ver.12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

[g] Romans 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

[h] 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

[i] Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

[k] Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Ephesians 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

IV. God did, from all eternity, decree to justify all the elect [l], and Christ did, in the fullness of time, die for their sins, and rise again for their justification [m]: nevertheless, they are not justified, until the Holy Spirit does, in due time, actually apply Christ unto them [n].

[l] Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Ver.19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Ver.20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

[m] Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.
1 Timothy 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

[n] Colossians 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled. Ver.22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Titus 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Ver.5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Ver.6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Ver.7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
