Q.82. What is the communion in glory which the members of the invisible church have with Christ?
A. The communion in glory which the members of the invisible church have with Christ, is
- in this life [w],
- immediately after death [x],
- and at last perfected at the resurrection and day of judgment [y].
[w] 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
[x] Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
- Luke 16:23
And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. - 2 Corinthians 12:4
how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. - Revelation 2:7
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.”’
Douglas Wilson writes:
In the interests of combating Roman Catholic merit-mongering, the Westminster fathers fell short of what Scripture actually teaches. Hades or Sheol is not the same as Gehenna, and it is a place for departed spirits. Prior to the resurrection of Christ, Hades also contained Paradise, or the bosom of Abraham. This does not lend any credence to the Romanist views of purgation, but the existence of more than two places should still be acknowledged. The Church should at some time revise the Confession. . . .
[y] 1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Q.84. Shall all men die?
A. Death being threatened as the wages of sin [d], it is appointed unto all men once to die [e]; for that all have sinned [f].
[d] Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
[e] Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
[f] Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Q.85. Death, being the wages of sin, why are not the righteous delivered from death, seeing all their sins are forgiven in Christ?
A. The righteous shall be delivered from death itself at the last day, and even in death are delivered from the sting and curse of it [g]; so that, although they die, yet it is out of God’s love [h], to free them perfectly from sin and misery [i], and to make them capable of further communion with Christ in glory, which they then enter upon [k].
The righteous shall be delivered from death itself at the last day, and even in death are delivered from the sting and curse of it [g];
[g] 1 Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. Ver.55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Ver.56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. Ver.57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
so that, although they die, yet it is out of God’s love [h],
[h] Isaiah 57:1-2 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. Ver.2 He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.
2 Kings 22:20 Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
to free them perfectly from sin and misery [i],
[i] Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Ephesians 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
and to make them capable of further communion with Christ in glory, which they then enter upon [k].
[k] Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Philippians 1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
